The first electronic drum was created in the early 1970s by Graeme Edge, drummer of The Moody Blues, in collaboration with Sussex University Professor Brian Groves. In the following 1980s, other companies started selling their own versions of Simmons’ electronic drums, notably Pearl, Roland and Yamaha. While electronic drum kits are typically used to trigger drum and percussion sounds, a MIDI -equipped electronic drum kit can be used to trigger any types of MIDI sounds, such as synthesized or sampled piano, guitar, or any other instrument or sound.The first model, introduced in 1985, was the Pad-8. Originally to be called MPC-8 (MIDI Percussion Controller 8), but was renamed Pad-8 to avoid legal implications with MPC Electronics. The second model, introduced in 1989, was the Pad-80 Octapad II. After the Pad-80, Roland continued to release SPD-8 with on-board sounds, as a standalone instrument in 1990, SPD-11 in 1993, which not only had more sounds but also built-in effects processing, and SPD-20 in 1998, Roland continued the line in 2010[8][9] with the Octapad SPD 30 which includes on-board sounds and effects. This may include an LCD or LED screen and individual LEDs that light up when sensors are triggered. The drum module is typically mounted on a stand, so that the drummer can easily reach it and see its display and other visual indicators. On the rear or top of the drum module is a patch bay with a number of labelled jacks for plugging in the sensors, audio outs, and MIDI in or outs. Drum modules typically contain “drum kit” presets in their memory. Each drum kit has different sounds, such as jazz drums played with a “brushes” sound, rock drums, Latin drums, African drums, or 1980s-era drum machine synthesized drum sounds Using an Octapad, you can play 100’s of different sounds!!
